It's finally summer. How do you spend yours? Do you prefer to stay busy, and keep your kids in camps? Or do prefer to keep things low key, and forget about schedules?
We continue our education through the summer months, but with a lighter load. What can I say? I believe strongly that a love of learning is not taught in school, but at home. A love of learning teaches a child to educate himself, and that is it their responsibility to learn throughout their lives. We all love science and history, and being the mean mom that I am, writing and math are required... well, strongly encouraged? But honestly they enjoy their math lessons and they only take about 10 minutes, and usually involve a game.
Down time is essential for kids. This is the time where they just get to be still, and do what they are interested in. Their brains make different connections when they get to use their creativity to stay busy, or not. Maybe they will prefer to read. (GASP!) You won't even have to use incentives to get them reading by the end of summer. There is a learning curve though! If your kids are used to being busy busy busy, boredom will come easily for them, but this will slowly pass over several weeks. You have to just accept the fact that they will say they are bored A LOT for the first few weeks. Just keep a list handy of simple things they can do when they are bored, but it isn't your job to keep them from actually being bored. If they don't like what's on your list they can come up with something on there own. I love seeing what my kids use their creative juices for. Last week they build a HUGE fort. It used both of our living room couches, and all 10 dining room chairs, as well as every single blanket in the closet. It was awesome!! They used that fort for 3 full days. (mom fail=no pictures ) What would you do with that time? I hopped in with them a few times, but I also worked a little, read a little, and got some housework done.
I am not saying we do nothing, but I don't pull out my calender and make sure we have something on our schedule 6 or 7 days of the week. We enjoy going berry picking, and to the park, and an occasional trip to the beach, and splash pad. We usually go to a few movies over the summer. The Wizard of OZ is showing in a local theater here over the summer, which we are really excited about seeing on a big screen. We play a lot in our little pop up pool and run the sprinkler under the trampoline. And we usually get together with friends several time per week. Did you know the bounce on your trampoline is WAY higher when the tramp is wet? While a lot of moms dread summer and have a never ending list of stuff to do, I LOVE it, and you can too! Enjoy your down time.
